Beginners in off-roading often hear about "beadlock", about "double beadlock". What is the particularity of this rim? What is it? BEADLOCK steel rims have a unique feature compared to standard steel rims. They are equipped with a steel hoop that is attached to the outside of the rim. This comes to trap the outside of the tire and keep it in position.
In other words, the concept of the Beadlock rim consists of pinching the tire bead between the rim and a steel hoop of the same diameter, all held together by bolts. Thus, the pressure inside is always the same and in case of impact, the tire remains integral with the rim.
Also know that we speak of double Beadlock, when there is a hoop on each side of the rim. This is the optimal wheel configuration when you want to do off-roading regularly and hard rock crawling.
What is the purpose of Beadlock mounting?
In off-terrain, tire under-inflation is the rule for several reasons:
Maximize tire grip on the ground
Improve driving comfort
Reduce wheel impacts on the ground and obstacles
Improve the stability of the 4x4
Conversely, the risk of under-inflation is ending up with the tire completely flat, which would be totally handicapping.
The Beadlock rim then allows you to maintain constant air pressure in the tire and retain all the benefits of under-inflation.
